Santa Clara Connections: County Supervisor candidate Susan Ellenberg

Santa Clara Connections: County Supervisor candidate Susan Ellenberg

Editor’s Note: In 2018, there will be an election to replace County Supervisor Ken Yeager who is finishing his final term. The district includes Santa Clara. So we will ask candidates to share with us their connection to Santa Clara in 300 words or so. Susan Ellenberg submitted the following. Other candidates will be offered the same opportunity, too, and we’ll print their information in the coming weeks.

I’m running for Santa Clara County Supervisor to continue the work that I’ve done to help children and families in our county.  I’m proud of what we have accomplished for our schools, but I know we can do more.

SE
As Vice President of the San Jose Unified School District, I’m bringing the school district and the community together to support student success.  We instituted free SAT exams for every junior and secured $5 million in additional funding for teachers and staff.

As Senior Director for Community Development at The Silicon Valley Organization, I’m facilitating social justice learning and engagement opportunities for business, nonprofit and public sector leaders.  I planted the seed that became Strive San Jose, which connects local high school students with paid summer internships, and expanded programs for women and seniors.

On the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women, I’m advocating for equal pay for all our county residents, greater resources for victims of sexual violence, and a criminal justice system that focuses on keeping families together and supporting successful re-entry.

I have worked as an attorney, an educator, and a community advocate, and I have deep roots in our community.  I’m a mentor to high school students through the Lincoln High School Future Visions Program, a member of Children’s Vision Council, and a local Rotarian.

My husband Steve is a Willow Glen native. We began our life together in San Jose almost thirty years ago and raised our three children here. Now, I want to ensure that more families have opportunities for success.  We can do more to improve our county for everyone.  That means housing people can afford, a transportation system that works, good public schools and quality, stable healthcare.

I know we can do better, together.  I hope you will join me.

  1. I get that this is suppose to be a general intro. It’s fine. But I want to know where Ellenberg stands on Santa Clara issues. Is she for keeping the curfew or will she side with the 49ers? What about other Santa Clara issues? I’m looking for an alternative to Caserta. So I want to know where candidates stand on issues important to me and the Northside.

    • Omar, we will be publishing questions and answers, as well as guest opinions from candidates on where they stand on issues, such as the ones you mention soon. We think it’s fair to allow each candidate to introduce themselves first. Keep in mind, these are candidates for County supervisor, and the County doesn’t have much impact on City laws/ordinances.

  2. She looks like a good person. She’s done a lot for the community. My friends who live in Willow Glen know her and say that she is honest and even tempered. I’ll definitely consider voting for her. Please share more information before the election.
