The first Chick-fil-A in Santa Clara opened a week ago at the corner of Scott and El Camino Real.
There was a long line for the opening on Thursday, November 14. That’s because the first 100 eligible adults in line on grand opening morning got a free year-supply of Chick-fil-A.
According to Chick-fil-A, the store will add nearly 100 new jobs. The operator is Joe Cho who has spent most of his life within about 15 miles of the new restaurant. Cho worked for Google for the last seven years.
Vice Mayor Patty Mahan cut the ribbon. She was the only elected official in attendance.
Chick-fil-A has drawn protests around the country from LGBT groups because of their political and social positions and contributions. Last year, there were protests in San Jose against Chick-fil-A at the airport.
But a few days after the Santa Clara opening, Chick-fil-A announced they’ll stop contributing to three organizations criticized by the LGBT community.
But they won’t rule out contributing to anti-LGBT groups in the future.
I am gay and also a Christian and don’t need society to tell me how to live. My values are my values.
My LGBTQ community has earned our rights and values as well and has made progress and I don’t think a chicken restaurant will ever destroy that.
I have eaten at chik-fil-A much better than McDonald’s that was there before.

To me they are a private business and can do as they want, that’s the freedoms they own.
If you don’t like it, don’t go.
I disagree with their practice but it don’t stop me from enjoying it or chastising others from going there.
Very baiting article. I welcome the new business here in Santa Clara, it will make money. So what Mahan was there, I honestly would have never said a word if Mayor Gillmor was there too, it would have been welcomed and I would not have been offended. I know personally both Gillmor and Mahan support LGBTQ rights as well as the rest of the council. Vice Mayor Mahan was with me in the Silicon Valley pride parade, and Mayor Gillmor was behind the raising of the pride flag at city hall while Councilmember O’Neill who was big on helping the AIDS foundation. So kinda unfair to chastise mahan
I was a little surprised to see she wasn’t in attendance. We live in such a politically correct world that it’s honestly scares me
I have my rights and beliefs and Chik-Fil-A has theirs
I know personally that even in the LGBTQ community it’s isn’t perfect, we deal with our own discrimination
Didn’t Mahan ride in a Gay Pride Parade with Becker. What a freakin’ phony she is.
