Santa Clara University Wins Women’s Soccer National Championship

By Robert Haugh

The Santa Clara University (SCU) Lady Broncos claimed their second national championship yesterday by defeating No. 1 ranked Florida State (FSU).

The Broncos (11-1) took the title in the NCAA College Cup by playing to a 1-1 tie in regulation (including double overtime) and claiming the decision 4-1 on penalty kicks over the Seminoles (13-0-3).

The Broncos converted all four of their penalty kick attempts. Julie Doyle, Sally Menti and Kelsey Turnbow each connected. Florida State missed their first first two attempts. Izzy D’Aquila drilled the game-winner.

After a scoreless first half, FSU took the initial lead in the 63rd minute. Yujie Zhao sent a cross to Jenna Nighswonger who scored a shot off the left post. It was the first time the Broncos trailed in the College Cup Tournament.

The Broncos evened the game 1-1 at the 84th minute  when Turnbow was able to capitalize on a turnover, dribble past some defenders before finishing with a goal with her left foot.

The Broncos picked up four straight wins over top 10 teams en route to the title: No. 7 Arkansas, No. 6 Clemson, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 1 Florida State.

The triumph yesterday in Cary, North Carolina was the second national title for SCU Head Coach Jerry Smith.

Florida State had won its past two College Cup games via penalty kick shootouts.
