After Santa Clara Resident’s Complaint, Zoning Comment Period Extended

By Robert Haugh

Thanks to Santa Clara neighborhood leader Howard Myers, Mission City residents will have more time to weigh in about our City’s zoning code and possible changes.

On Monday, June 13, 2022, Myers posted this message on Facebook directed at his Councilman Suds Jain:

Suds, I just received an email today (June 13) at 10:41AM regarding a very detailed survey about re-zoning. Then I see we have between now and June 13th 2022 to review it and comment.

How does that work? This is the first time I have seen it and it just shows up on the city’s FB page today also. Again with the same time constraint.

This is a very detailed zoning code with 382 pages. We need longer than a couple of hours to review it.

Sudhanshu Jain, as our council member can you please find out what is happening with this? Is it really closing today?

Thanks,

The City had posted the following notice on Facebook two days prior. But that was on Saturday and Sunday. Wow.

It looks like City staff was trying to hide this info from the public.

But after Myers got involved, the deadline for feedback has been extended to June 20, 2022.  That’s not much time for a detailed and complicated plan. But it’s better than a few days.

Kudos to Howard Myers.

  1. My question is: Why do the NIMBYs need an extra week to object to everything? Isn’t 24 hours enough time to say no to all proposed changes?

  2. Thanks Howard! A true Santa Clara watchdog. So much for the city staff being transparent, maybe it was an accident.

It’s always good to keep an eye out for things. 👁️

  3. District 6 Voters immediately complained about this, too (see email, below). To say the least, this is extremely bad optics for City management. Shame on the City Council / City Manager for allowing this to happen.

Subject: REMINDER | Review the Proposed Zoning Code Update

    Hi J Davidson,

We just received your email this morning, June 13, 2022 at 10:41 a.m. requesting public feedback for the City’s Proposed Zoning Update with a deadline of today, June 13, 2022.

“A public review draft of the Zoning Code is available now through *June 13, 2022*”

Could you please extend the deadline for public comment out a week or two? One day’s notice seems a bit unreasonable.

    Thanks.
