BREAKING: Grand Jury Transcripts Show Anthony Becker Tried to Frame Lisa Gillmor and Cover Up His Crime by Getting Married

By Robert Haugh

The Mercury News reviewed the Santa Clara Criminal Grand Jury transcripts of the witnesses against indicted Councilmember Anthony Becker.

In a story by Grace Hase, Becker leaked the report to Carolyn Schuk of the Silicon Valley Voice, according to Councilmember Suds Jain.

Becker then lied about it to the Grand Jury, and tried to falsely frame Mayor Lisa Gillmor.

To top it off, Becker told a campaign volunteer he married his then-boyfriend Abel Cardona so he wouldn’t testify against him.

All that deserves a quintuple WOW – the first in Santa Clara News Online history!

People online are calling Becker an embarrassment and a sleazeball, among other things.

Below are excerpts from the story which may be behind a paywall:

Santa Clara Councilmember Anthony Becker admitted to Councilmember Suds Jain that he leaked a confidential grand jury report, and asked a campaign volunteer subpoenaed in the course of the investigation to blame the leak on Mayor Lisa Gillmor, according to grand jury transcripts obtained by this news organization.

During a March 29 hearing, Jain — one of Becker’s allies on the council — said that the councilmember had called him two to three weeks prior and admitted that he had leaked the grand jury report to Carolyn Schuk, an editor at the hyperlocal news outlet the Silicon Valley Voice.

“He was just under a lot of stress,” Jain said to the grand jury. “To be honest, I wish he hadn’t told me. But he did, and so I have to report it today.”

On the day (Becker campaign volunteer David) Andre was subpoenaed to testify to the grand jury, he said he received a call from Becker, who said his then-boyfriend, Abel Cardona, had been subpoenaed. When Andre confirmed he had been subpoenaed as well, he said Becker told him, “Tell him it was Lisa Gillmor,” referring to the city’s mayor.

On the day Andre was subpoenaed to testify to the grand jury, he said he received a call from Becker, who said his then-boyfriend, Abel Cardona, had been subpoenaed. When Andre confirmed he had been subpoenaed as well, he said Becker told him, “Tell him it was Lisa Gillmor,” referring to the city’s mayor.

Andre told Becker not to contact him until the investigation was over, but on the day the district attorney’s office seized the councilmember’s phones and computers, Becker showed up on his doorstep, Andre said. The campaign volunteer said he was “nervous” and “disturbed” that the councilmember showed up unannounced and pressured Becker to answer whether he was behind the leak.

Becker at first said no, but then later told him that Cardona had leaked the report, according to Andre. Becker and Cardona were married in January, according to testimony from Becker’s mother, Virginia Goncalves.

Andre told the grand jury that Becker said he and Cardona were getting married so Cardona wouldn’t have to testify against him.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for more.

  2. Merc did an update:
Chandhok said he asked Becker if he had sent the report to anyone else. The councilmember said he had already sent it to Angie Tolliver, the editor-in-chief at the Silicon Valley Voice.

Where’s miles fingers in this? Spotlight too.

  3. The fact that Becker felt comfortable to admit to Councilmember Suds Jain that he leaked the report speaks volumes as to the moral brotherhood of those two. The fact the Jain was so happy to speak of this speaks volumes of his loyalty. Dump Jains!
