Sutter Health Unveils Plan for Major New Medical Center in Santa Clara Near Levi’s Stadium

By Robert Haugh

Sutter Health has announced plans for a major new medical center in Santa Clara, marking the largest capital investment in the organization’s history.

The project includes two new campuses totaling approximately 1 million square feet, centered on a new 13-plus acre site at 2831–2841 Mission College Blvd. It’s currently an office park.

The planned eight-story hospital would be approximately 850,000 square feet and include 272 licensed beds with space for 30 more if needed.

The facility is expected to include an emergency department, intensive care units, labor and delivery services with a Level III neonatal ICU, operating rooms, advanced imaging, and a rooftop helipad.

If approved, the Santa Clara medical center would serve as a flagship facility within a broader expansion of Sutter’s presence in Silicon Valley.

The health system has previously announced more than 1 million square feet of ambulatory facilities in partnership with The Sobrato Organization across two locations about a mile apart. The first, the Sutter East Santa Clara Care Center at 2441 Mission College Blvd., opened in October with urgent care, pediatrics, cardiology, lab services, and imaging.

Sutter argues the new hospital will help address a significant gap in local care. The city has seen extensive population and employment growth over the past decade because of office development near Levi’s Stadium and the northside tech corridor.

The project carries an estimated price tag of $2.8 billion. An economic analysis commissioned by Sutter projects more than 5,000 jobs once the facilities are fully open by 2031, including roughly 3,000 clinical and staff positions. The construction phase is expected to support another 2,500 jobs, with a projected economic impact of $3.3 billion.

Sutter also plans to introduce new residency and fellowship programs in Santa Clara beginning in 2027, including internal medicine, OB/GYN, general surgery, and radiology. The medical center is projected to open in late 2031, pending regulatory approvals and construction timelines.
