Help Protect the First Amendment and Freedom of the Press in a David vs Goliath Fight in Santa Clara
By Robert Haugh
Santa Clara News Online was started by me, Robert Haugh, to provide excellent and independent coverage of major political and policy issues in Santa Clara, the City I love.
That mission is now threatened by a meritless lawsuit designed to silence me.
Recently, I was served with a lawsuit by the Santa Clara Weekly and its Publisher Miles Barber alleging items such as defamation, misappropriation of trade names and interference with business practices based on the Santa Clara News’ reporting on them.
I believe the claims are without merit and designed only to intimidate, harass, or silence me. I have spoken to many lawyers who believe I have a very strong defense based on my free speech rights and freedom of the press.
But to defend myself I will need to raise money for legal and court fees. I am willing to do so because I believe in what I’m doing. I also believe the community appreciates having an additional source of news other than the Santa Clara Weekly.
So, I turn to you. Will you chip in what you can to help me fight off the Santa Clara Weekly lawsuit?
My goal is to raise $20,000. To maintain my independence, I won’t accept contributions from one source over $2,000.
I would be tremendously grateful for your support. If our community comes together, we can fight for accurate and independent reporting in Santa Clara. I vow to do that for all of us.
