Silicon Valley Wanderings

Silicon Valley is well-known for diversity and entrepreneurial spirit. This weekend and the week ahead showcases a lot of culture and innovation with a wide array of events for all sorts of audiences in and around Santa Clara.

From the 46th Annual Stanford Pow Wow, to the 4th Annual Irish Fleadh, to the 2nd Annual Latino Education Summit: Silicon Valley, to a meet-n-greet with Paw Patrol characters, roller derby, a country music concert and much more, there’s quite an eclectic mix of things to do locally. Here’s a brief list of some of the interesting events coming up:

Friday, May 12 to Sunday, May 14

46th Annual Stanford Pow Wow

Stanford University campus

The Stanford American Indian Organization (SAIO) and the Stanford Powwow Planning Committee host the 46th Annual Stanford Powwow on the Stanford University campus. The Powwow will be held in the Eucalyptus Grove at Galvez and Campus Drives. Events include an Indian market, performances by dance groups, Indian Art Market, dance competitions, Gourd dancing and more.

Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14

4th Annual Silicon Valley Irish Fleadh

Saturday: 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., 210 Hope Street, Mountain View, CA 94041

This event features live music, food, beer, kid’s zone, crafts and vendors. Headlining bands include Zoo Station, The Black Donnely’s and Plastic Paddy.

Saturday, May 13

2nd Annual Latino Education Summit: Silicon Valley

7:30 a.m., Santa Clara University

Presented by Santa Clara University Graduate School of Education and Counseling Psychology and The Foundation for Hispanic Education, this event will discuss the specific language ELLs will be expected to interpret and produce in math, science, language arts and social studies.  In addition, the cross-disciplinary language of argumentation (a key skill in the new standards) and content-area language expectations in dual language settings will be addressed. Attendees will have the choice to attend two of 11 breakout sessions — nine on learning and teaching methods and two on legal issues related to immigration in the new political climate.

Money May Presents Access Shred Day

10 a.m. to 1 p.m., St. Justin’s parking lot, 2655 Homestead Road, Santa Clara, CA 95051

In partnership with Access Corporation, this is an opportunity to shred paper you no longer need to  shred paper – for free! Shredding will end when the truck is full, so arrive early! Each car will be able to shred up to three boxes full of documents.

Silicon Valley Roller Girls 

5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., City Beach Sports Santa Clara, 2911 Meade Avenue, Santa Clara, CA 95051

This double-header event will feature the always-exciting and action-packed sport of roller derby. The Silicon Valley Roller Girls hoist their second home bout battling Sonoma County Roller Derby.

Meet & Greet – Marshall & Chase from Paw Patrol

Children can meet Marshall and Chase from the cartoon Paw Patrol.

Kartwheel: A Mario Kart inspired race 

1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Hellman Hollow, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA 94121

This interesting race event is a retro twist on the typical fun run or walk. The race is run in pairs, with each team member running their own pace. The course features interactive Mario Kart themed mini games, tasks and other challenges.

Wednesday, May 17
