Fire Department Plans Event and Demonstrations for Fire Prevention Week

By Robert Haugh

Next week is National Fire Prevention Week. The theme is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape.”

In Santa Clara, a family-friendly community event will kick off the week at Fire Station #2, 1900 Walsh Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Firefighters will demonstrate auto extrication and rappelling. They’ll also display fire apparatus.

In addition, Station #2 will have a kid’s agility station, fire extinguisher practice, and the opportunity for Mission City residents to flow some water from a hose line.

Of course, there will be fire prevention education activities to learn how to keep your family fire safe.  In a typical home fire, residents may have only one to two minutes from the time the smoke alarm sounds to escape safely.

During Fire Prevention Week, Santa Clara firefighters will also visit schools and host other events.
