Tragic Car Accident in Santa Clara This Weekend, Police Ask for Assistance

Two vehicles collided on San Tomas Expressway and El Camino Real just after midnight on Friday. One passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to the Santa Clara police department, a Volvo was speeding westbound on El Camino Real at San Tomas Expressway and likely ran a red light. 

The vehicle collided with a BMW traveling northbound on San Tomas Expressway.

Santa Clara police officers and firefighters arrived on the scene and provided medical assistance. 

Both drivers were taken to a local trauma center. But the BMW’s passenger did not survive.

The deceased was a 31-year-old male Sonoma resident.

Officers detected the odor of alcohol on the breath and the body of the Volvo driver who was identified as Isaias Mendoza-Inijuez.

This accident remains an active investigation. The public is asked to contact Traffic Investigator S. Wilson at (408) 615-4764 with information.

The Santa Clara Police Department urges everyone to drink responsibly, designate a sober driver, or use a ride-share service if needed.
