For the first time in Santa Clara history, the Vice Mayor will be a City Councilmember under indictment.
Last night, Anthony Becker was appointed Vice Mayor with a 5-2 vote.
He is accused of leaking a Grand Jury report to the 49ers and lying about it.
Becker starts his trial in about 60 days in March. If convicted of the felony perjury charge, he could face up to four years in prison.
Becker got the support of his 49er-friendly colleagues.
In addition to Becker, City Councilmembers Raj Chahal, Karen Hardy, Suds Jain and Kevin Park voted to appoint Becker as Vice Mayor.
In the Grand Jury report that Becker leaked, the Grand Jury concluded that the City Council majority frequently sided with the team over the City’s interests.
Mayor Lisa Gillmor and City Councilmember Kathy Watanabe voted against Becker’s appointment.
City Manager Jovan Grogan made the staff recommendation to appoint Becker as Vice Mayor since he is next in line of rotation for the position.
Becker could have voluntarily chosen not to serve as Vice Mayor, saving his colleagues an embarrassing vote.

Well, rumor has it that a guy named Ig Reilly who rents in the old downtown has been watching council meetings for a year, getring some encouragenent to run in 2024 since he has some axes to grind.
What has been said is that Reilly works for a firm that handles health care for seniors and he has met some Little League parents who offered to volunteer. Some other rec people mad at Becker led him to download stuff.
Football has become way too corrupt, case in point.
Looking at this picture of Becker it feels like the werewolves of london have taken over Santa Clara.
God help us all!
How can some members of the City Council appoint A.Becker who is under investigation for criminal activity? He is supposed to be representing District 6 and has done nothing in that area and now they appoint him Vice Mayor.
What’s wrong with this picture? Who is our representative?
Pray hard that nothing happens to Mayor Gillmor for the next few months!
Becker as vice mayor is as useless as Kamala Harris is as Vice President. Both low IQ types in a mostly ceremonial position. The difference is Harris is not a criminal. I hope you get convicted and received the max sentence Becker. I assume that’s why you’re growing the beard, so you look tough in prison. No one will feel sorry for you. What a loser.
It is not fair to lump VP Harris with Becker.
I can’t decide which one should be insulted.
I’m confused, Kamala Harris has a Bachelor Degree from Howard University and a JD from University of California Hastings College of Law and passed the California bar. That is low IQ, really????

I could just stop right here.
But I just can’t. I have to ask one simple question.
Is our City now in better shape with this new Vice Mayor?
Just think who he is replacing.
Really how many times do we ever get to see an elected official just destroy themselves publicly like we did last February 7th when Park used a Children’s Book to go after one of our local Business Owners.
Then getting to watch him and his buddy Becker giggling like little school kids who just soiled their own pants.
Sad day for sure. Seems like we have had more than our share lately.
