Santa Clara City Councilmember Karen Hardy Uses Dead Police Chief to Campaign for Measure B

By Robert Haugh

Is there anything worse than using a former Santa Clara Police Chief to endorse your campaign when he really doesn’t?

That’s what the Yes on Measure B Campaign did with former Police Chief Frank Vasquez, as Santa Clara News Online (SCNO) reported yesterday

Vasquez asked the Yes campaign to remove him from their website. He opposes Measure B.

So what’s worse? How about using an endorsement from a dead Police Chief?

SCNO has learned that Santa Clara City Councilmember Karen Hardy created this ad and put it on her Facebook page:

Unfortunately, former Police Chief Donald “Manny” Ferguson died in 2013 – 11 years ago.

Hardy’s ad also has a false endorsement of Vasquez.

The No on Measure B Campaign is also using law enforcement in its campaign communication.

The Santa Clara Police Officers Association is leading the campaign against Measure B.

Their campaign is using current (and living) Police Chief Pat Nikolai in their “Don’t Be Fooled” campaign ads.

  1. There are now TWO requests by Charlie Arolla and Frank Vasquez on Karen West Hardy’s FB page telling her to basically cease and desist posting their pictures and statements which they never gave permission to do. No comment obviously from Karen. Her name suits her so well.

  2. Our future under Suds Jain and Yed Jork:

    San Francisco Police Chief: Appointed.
Result: human excrement on the streets, low to NO response times on helping victims of crimes, car break-ins, theft, murder… Santa Clara’s future with an appointed police chief?

New York Police Department is headed by a Police Commissioner: Appointed.
Result: death and destruction. Santa Clara’s future with an appointed police chief?

    Seattle Police Chief: Appointed.
Result: Buildings burned, businesses closed, people denigrated, and all things demonic. Santa Clara’s future with an appointed police chief?

    Chicago Police Chief: Appointed.
Result: “The Department is led by the Superintendent of Police, who is appointed by the Mayor.” Wow. 49er 5 is selling us down the river—unless you want to want to live in crime-infested Chicago. Santa Clara’s future with an appointed police chief?

    …. too many to enumerate….

  3. Jed’s fun fact:

Jed York was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio. He went to some fancy-schmancy high school—shoulda went to Boardman High School—graduates from which are tougher than nails BUT have integrity.

Youngstown’s police chief is APPOINTED. Yet, under the APPOINTED police chief, Youngstown crimes are HIGHER than elsewhere in Ohio.

No wonder why Jed doesn’t live there… neither the Original 49er owners—the DeBartolos.

Reportedly Jed lives in Los Altos Hills—of course… he wouldn’t defecate (like SF) on a city that he lives in.

The veracity of the information in the following links are up the reader to confirm:

  4. Santa Clara and “Santa Clara Valley” is renowned world-wide as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight.” Of course you know that our beloved city produced many fruits (e.g., apricots, prunes, etc.). But the “Valley of Heart’s Delight” would NOT have been possible without those peoples that put in hours after hours of back-breaking work to harvest that fruit.

Some elitist that have since been invited to move into our city and have the gall to refer to past founders as “dirty people” and look down on them.

Santa Clarans thrive on hard work and respect those who do the same. For all.

Some commenters cite “Harvard” tripe as some authority, just like some councilpersons who throw out credentials of “MIT” and “CalTech.” Ha! What a joke. Those credentials are waning and really do not help support their efforts to increase tyranny over our Mission City.

Destroyers of Santa Clara bleat as sheep that a chief of police must be “educated.” Those snooty, overly-erudite, narcissistic, anti-responsibility, etc. people demand a police chief with formal “college education.”

Yah, right. Next time a citizen of Santa Clara is shopping and is assaulted, what good is that the chief of police went to Harvard, Yale, MIT, CalTech, etc….. NOTHING!

GIVE me a “BEAT” cop every time. The TRUE education is on the STREETS and NOT in some fancy-schmancy CLASSROOM.

Santa Clarans know hard work and know when they are being hoodwinked.

    • Why is Asian law Alliance endorsing measure b? They got involved with district voting too just like Jed York. Are THEY helping funnel money for Jed?

  5. Yes on b pushers are calling around begging for support. My cousin got a jingle from raj chahal for support the yes vote. Fly a kite, raj. Folks know better.

  6. This is quite the story and disturbing one. Surveys and past CRCs indicated voters support an elected police chief. But the 49er5 went ahead wasting taxpayer $$ and creating phony ads to push personal agendas and Jed York’s too. After March 5, the focus needs to be on November and a new council majority!

  7. Wow,
This is now the new low for this 49er Council Group. And that is saying a lot. This is also the same group of “Leaders” that just a few days ago voted to appointed Tony Becker to be our City’s new Vice Mayor. Yes the same Tony Becker who just got his Federal Court Date pushed back now to early April. Conveniently just after the election mind you.
So really as bad as that was… this is now the new low.
If this was a TV show I might be really interested in seeing what’s next from this misguided group of self proclaimed “Geniuses”. But it is not, and I am fearful of what is coming next.
This group is reaching new lows every single day.

    Vote No on A
    Vote No on B

Going forward continue to vote against whomever or whatever the 49ers want to back. Right now, it’s that easy to get our City back.
The bad news is The 49ers have 30 more years to figure this out. And I’m not talking about winning the Super Bowl ever again. For many in the upper Leadership of the team, this whole mess is more ego and business than anything else.

The Wall Street Journal just released a Podcast on our City. It is 20+ min long, and something that will educate more of you quickly at just how bad this all is for our City.

  8. I have both Messaged Karen West Hardy and Commented regarding her post on February 6th which is an ad for the passage of Measure B on the March 5th Special Election to make Santa Clara’s Chief of Police a position appointed by the City Manager. I am not in favor of the passage of Measure B and have never endorsed its passage or given the measure’s proponents my permission to use my likeness or any quote. I have posted the following to her, which you may repeat on your Facebook page: “Karen Hardy : Please remove my likeness and quote from this and ANY ads and endorsements proposing the passage of Measure B. I am not in favor of converting the position to one appointed by the Santa Clara City Manager; and the information you have created in this Measure B ad published on February 6th on your Facebook Page is false and misleading. Please remove my image and quote immediately.” Charles Arolla, Chief of Police, Retired.

    • Incredible, thank you for posting, Chief Charlie Arolla.

Looks like Measure B is losing steam faster than an empty kettle. What else do we not know?

    • Charlie, I’ve read through letters submitted to the 2023 Charter Review Committee finding this submission…

Minimum Qualifications for Santa Clara’s Chief of Police

Measure I was submitted to Santa Clara’s voters in 2000 because of the belief that the
then-current Charter’s requirements were insufficient for a candidate for Chief of Police
with the duties and responsibilities which were incumbent for that Office. The current
Charter Review Committee must keep in mind that these were minimum requirements
that reflected the opinion of the City Attorney Michael Downey in 2000. He believed
that the Charter could not hold higher qualifications than those required of a Sheriff in
      the State of California.

I do not believe that the Committee should be limited by this belief; and should actively
explore raising the standards for the elected Chief to be consistent with those of
      appointed Chiefs in adjacent jurisdictions
; and that Santa Clara is not restricted by State
or Federal law to limit the qualifications for an elected Chief of Police.

      Respectfully Submitted,
Charles Arolla, Chief of Police (Retired)

All material submitted to the CRC is public domain which is why the City of Santa Clara makes it publicly accessible with no restriction. And your police chief headshot is also public domain, it can be found at the public library.

The images don’t say “Chief Arolla endorses Measure B”, they simply quote a letter you purportedly wrote to the Charter Review Committee. Apparently the No side is calling former police chiefs to try and remove public domain assets from public use.
