For decades, Santa Clara’s popular July 4th City Picnic and Fireworks Show has been held in Central Park. That Mission City tradition is ending.
Last Tuesday, the City Council majority voted to move the event to Mission College on a 5-2 vote.
Councilmembers Anthony Becker, Raj Chahal, Suds Jain, Karen Hardy, and Kevin Park voted to move the event.
Mayor Lisa Gillmor and Councilmember Kathy Watanabe voted against the move.
Here’s the staff rationale for the move:
Despite what City Staff said about security concerns, Police Chief Pat Nikolai said that his department would make sure the event was safe at either location.
Nikolai also said that as a resident he hoped the tradition would return to Central Park.

So (if I read it correctly) the picnic will be moved to Mission College and the fireworks will be cancelled?
i can see the need to move it this year,but it should be moved back for next year.
Wrong move by the same council members, they need to go.

Think about it. The 49er 5 have done SOME MUCH damage to our Community, they are “SUGGESTING” we view fireworks from Great America OVER WHICH Jed York has great influence.

But the new “Magical” playground surfaces wouldn’t be happy if a spark hit either the poured-in-place rubber/plastic “all inclusive” play surfaces or the “Magical” artificial turf that’s popped up on the toddler playground or on the “inclusive” playground. BTW, I wonder where the artificial turf came from … as the Center for Environmental Health recently sent a legal notice to Lowes and Home Depot and others due to PFAS ‘forever chemical’ contamination (https://rb.gy/qjkzi7). Plus warranties for poured in place and artificial turf surfaces are 7 – 10 years, so in about that time it will all need to be replaced: $$$ for taking away and landfilling the old stuff, plus $$$ for putting new plastic and rubber down. Who, exactly, thought this was great?
Yes, I wonder what the magical bridge all inclusive playground is all about. Does that mean adults are included? Dogs, cats? And the problems you list makes it sound not so well thought out. Starting to sound like the $2million SF toilet. But we digress… Does that mean it won’t have fireworks regardless of where it is held?

The playground is about being inclusive of children who have physical and other issues.
It is very well thought out. If you are curious about what these are about then go visit the nearby one that was built years ago in Palo Alto. I have visited that one with relatives and it was a beautiful playground.
Having one at Central Park is a very nice addition for all the city’s children.
