Santa Clara City Candidates Filing Deadline Today, Will There Be a “49er Six”?

By Robert Haugh

Today is the deadline for Santa Clara candidates to file their nominating papers for City Council, Police Chief, and City Clerk.

Three incumbent Councilmembers are running for re-election: Anthony Becker, Suds Jain and Kevin Park.

Yup, Becker has decided to run even though he’s under indictment and his felony perjury trial starts next week.

The three incumbents are part of the 49er Five.

The 49ers have actively recruited candidates in their “Quest for Six.”

Albert Gonzalez was recruited by the team to move into District 1 and run.  Councilmember Kathy Watanabe is termed out and the seat is open.

Another 49er recruit, Ann Kepner, decided not to run in District 6, Becker’s district.

Police Chief Pat Nikolai and City Clerk Hosam Haggag are not seeking re-election.

According to sources, the 49ers have also recruited candidates for their seats, too. Santa Clara News Online will report on those races in a future story.

Here’s the candidates’ list updated on the City Clerk’s website as of yesterday:

  1. Good endorsement
    Honest
    Sincere

Don’t see filing yet for Becker, Park or Jain.

If I were York, I would stay out of it.

  2. There are several qualified candidates running. It’s great to see civic minded people saying enough is enough and filing papers to run. We have an opportunity to take back our city and have common sense back as the majority of our council. Please take the time to get to know these candidates. When they knock in your door, ask them questions about how they will represent you. I know some of them personally and have worked with them on commissions and committees. I am proud to call them friends. We need to get rid of the petty and vindictive attitudes on the current council. We need people that will work for us and not be beholden to any special interest groups.
One last comment, if the 49ers back them, they are the WRONG choice for Santa Clara.

    • Mr. Caldwell, well spoken.
Thank you for being a great neighbor.
Then Vote what is best for you, your family, friends, and ultimately The City.
When in doubt, just look to see who the 49ers are backing, nod, and then vote the other way.
In our last elections, we crushed Measures A and B.
The 49ers wanted so badly to add appointed City Clerk and appointed Police Chief to their growing list of “Sock Puppets”.
The City is currently looking for new residents to volunteer to serve on the CAC (Police Chief’s Advisory Committee). I’ve been lucky enough to be part of that group now for a couple of years. So far they haven’t voted to kick me off of it.
Our City is worth fighting for.
Good news is we don’t need to fight, we just need to vote.
