The election results are not final but the Santa Clara races have been decided. Here are the biggest winners and losers from Election Day.

The City Council races were the major contest.  Here are the winners in each district ranked by the number of votes they received as of November 18.

Kelly Cox, District Six (4,002)

Suds Jain, District Five (3,379)

Kevin Park, District Four (3,335)

Albert Gonzalez, District One (2,449)

There are approximately 10,000 votes to be counted Countywide. There’s a chance that Park can overtake Jain in total vote support to move into second place on the City Council winners list once all the votes are in.

The biggest winners:

• Cox – She got the most votes and beat two challengers: George Guerra (1,817 votes) and Anthony Becker (1,677 votes). 

• The 49ers – They spent approximately $2.5 million to keep control of the Council.  They maintained their hold and have a new 49er Five, trading Becker for Gonzalez.

The biggest losers:

• Guerra – the team spent over $600,000 to help him and he only got 140 votes more than Becker who is under indictment for felony perjury for leaking a Grand Jury report to the team.  Wow.  That’s over $330 for each Guerra vote.  Double wow.

• The 49ers – They belong on both the biggest winners and losers list. See Guerra and Becker.  Also, they maintained control of the Council but it cost them over $230 per vote.  What if they used the money on a free agent defensive lineman? They might have a better record than a 5-5 record and last place in the NFC West.

There were other important Citywide races, too.

The biggest winners:

• Lisa Gillmor and Kathy Watanabe – they rewrote Measure I making it smaller and earmarking important projects.  It worked.  They needed to get over two-thirds of the vote and Measure I got 69 percent yes vote. It’s a $400 million infrastructure investment in Santa Clara – the first one in six decades.  Watanabe also won a seat on the Santa Clara Unified School Board with an impressive 80 percent of the vote. 

• Santa Clara Fire Fighters and Police Officers – they were the face of the Measure I campaign. Their departments will get much-needed new facilities from the bond.

• Santa Clara Police Officers Association – their number one priority was to elect a new Police Chief.  They did.  Cory Morgan won with an overwhelming 66 percent of the vote over Mario Brasil.

• Bob O’Keefe is the new City Clerk. He won 10,263 votes in a multi-candidate field. O’Keefe is a former CHP officer and Grand Juror. He’ll be a more active and engaged Clerk than his predecessor Hosam Haggag who was absent most of the time.
