Santa Clara Vice Mayor Anthony Becker Resigns Becoming the Second 49er-Backed Candidate Caught in Scandal Since 2018

By Robert Haugh

Late Friday, Santa Clara Vice Mayor Anthony Becker resigned.

The previous day, he was found guilty of felony perjury and could have been removed from office.

Yesterday, Becker put out a statement talking about his accomplishments in office.  He did not express any remorse for his actions or impact on the Mission City.

Becker is now the second 49er-backed candidate caught in a scandal and forced to resign from a Santa Clara office.

In 2018, disgraced former Santa Clara City Councilmember Dominic Caserta resigned after numerous female students and campaign aides accused him of sexual improprieties. Caserta was a Santa Clara High School teacher.

Caserta did not express any remorse upon his resignation either. Judge Javier Alcala will sentence Becker on January 31, 2024.

Newly elected City Councilmember Kelly Cox will replace Becker in 10 days to represent District Six.

  1. Becker ended with a whimper and not a bang.

    Why?

In the end, Becker believed his own lies.

Jain and Park will spend their new yerms running in olace.

  2. Let’s see, what did he accomplish in 4 years.
Sold our city out to Jed York one vote at a time.
Fired a Parks & Rec Commissioner because he didn’t like him.
Fired a city manager along with his cohorts for holding the 49ers accountable.
Fired a city attorney for the same reasons
Laughed while Kevin Park demeaned a speaker in an open council meeting
Leaked a civil grand jury report to the 49ers and then blamed it on the Mayor.
    Lied to a grand jury
Confessed his crime to a fellow councilperson who said nothing about it until he was under oath in front of the grand jury
Repeatedly denied being Jed’s lap dog
    Convicted of felony perjury
Resigned in disgrace with ZERO remorse in his resignation statement.
Failed to uphold his oath to be ethical and represent the best interests of Santa Clara.
Hard to believe that over 1000 people voted for this person in the recent election.
A bad chapter in our cities history has finally come to an end.

    • Dana, well stated.
Thanks for doing all that you have done to help our Great City.
Also, thanks for the laugh, I’m the Volunteer Parks and Rec Commissioner that Becker had removed. Still waiting to hear why?
It’s ok, turns out, there are many places concerned individuals can volunteer their time and personal resources to help make the World a better place.
So on January 31st at 9 am I’m going to volunteer to bring a box of Stan’s Donuts to the Morgan Hill Court House.
Dana, let me know if you want me to save you one.

On a way more positive note!
      Congratulations Kelly Cox,

      Burt Field
Former SC Parks and Recreation Commissioner.

    • Dana, yes it is odd that 1000 people voted for him. That’s why I am frustrated when there is a big voter turnout drive. We don’t need more voters, we need more voters that are informed . Any question these 1000 voters had no idea what was going on? Other than the 5 that are Anthony’s friends, that is. That, unfortunately, is why we still have Suds.

    • Great summary Dana.

You forgot to add that he’s a past Jabroni Award nominee. Never won it, but was seriously in contention several years running.
