Construction Begins at VTA BART West Portal in Santa Clara, Expect Noise and Vibrations

By Robert Haugh

Construction is ramping up at the VTA BART West Portal located at the Newhall Yard and Maintenance Facility in Santa Clara.

Beginning as early as Thursday, July 10, contractors will start installing underground retaining walls as part of BART’s long-awaited extension into the City.

The work involves driving sheet piles — long steel panels — deep into the ground using vibratory and impact hammers, a process expected to continue through April 2026.

Santa Clara residents can expect increased noise and vibration from the construction, which will run Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

VTA has installed noise curtains to help mitigate the impact and says vibrations will be actively monitored to stay below allowable thresholds.

The project will also bring large construction equipment and heavy truck traffic to Newhall Street during work hours.

For more information or to receive construction updates, residents can visit vtabart.org or call the VTA BART hotline at 408-321-2345 (press #2) for live assistance after hours.

Santa Clara’s representative on VTA is Councilmember Suds Jain.

  1. Good god man. Cannot ANYONE give me the street address of the “Newhall Yard and Maintenance Facility in Santa Clara” ?? I’ve googled 10+ sites. grumpy emoji.

I ride my bicycle all over that area, and I am keen to know the street address. Can you help me out?

    • I believe it’s

480 Brokaw Rd, Santa Clara, CA 95050

but parcels covering it are addressed:
1115 Champions Wy, Santa Clara, CA 95050
831 Newhall Dr, San Jose, CA 95110
801 Newhall St, San Jose, CA 95110
767 Newhall St, San Jose, CA 95110

though that last one may be that individual substation.

I don’t think they’ll settle on a ‘final’ address until the end of the project as while they’re laying out the sections now, certain areas will surely be given different addresses (eg. the station itself, offices, BART maintenance yard)
