Santa Clara Police Cite More Than 100 Drivers in Labor Day DUI Sweep

By Robert Haugh

Santa Clara Police issued over 100 citations during a three-week traffic enforcement effort through Labor Day weekend.

Officers targeted speeding, including drivers going over 65 MPH, and suspected impaired driving.

The sweep was part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. The national effort added officers to remove impaired drivers from the roads.

In California, drunk driving caused about a third of all traffic deaths in 2023.  That’s roughly four deaths every day. Wow.

First-time DUI charges carry steep consequences, with fines averaging $13,500 and potential license suspension.

Police warn impairment isn’t limited to alcohol. Cannabis, illicit drugs, and even prescription or over-the-counter medications can affect driving.

The program was funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
