Last night, the Santa Clara City Council approved allowing 24/7 operations at the West Portal site for the BART Phase II Extension Project.
The project is set to have four stations and is a 6-mile extension from Berryessa/North San Jose to Santa Clara, including a new station in the Mission City.
There will also be a train maintenance yard known as the Newhall Maintenance Yard.
On a 5-0 vote, the Council decided to extend nighttime operations from 22 to 24 hours and allow work on Sundays, excluding truck hauling.
Mayor Lisa Gillmor did not attend the meeting because of illness. Vice Mayor Kelly Cox was traveling out of town.
Construction at the West Portal site marks a critical early stage in the extension project.
Valley Transportation Authority officials said that while the extended work hours will increase nighttime activity, truck hauling will remain restricted to standard hours to minimize community disruption.
Approximately 75 percent of truck hauling trips will utilize Newhall Drive and Coleman as the trucks travel to Highway 880. 25 percent of truck trips would use Brokaw Road.
With the expansion of work hours now approved, crews at the West Portal site are expected to continue preparations for tunnel boring and major construction operations.

The mayor and vice mayor were absent last nights mtg.
which is probably why it was the sH**SH** that people
witnessed until 1 AM. Amazing that jain didn’t want
to change the BART station again.
The 49er 5 were the epitomy of what a bad council
looks like. Everyone knows more than they NEVER
wanted to know about Hardy who really appreciates everyone.
Highlight was finding a solution collecting trash from Suburu dealership
on Stevens Creek and make things safe and people happy.
3 motions failed. Park and chahal just didn’t see the forest
for the trees to open their frickin minds to continue and
get more info. All the grandstanding by park was nauseating.
So much for SC being a business friendly community.
A night of mumbo jumbo.
Another reason to get rid of Suds. Why were we not informed of this vote? We already have too much noise pollution. Now we get it 24 hours a day?!
