Santa Clara Approves $1 Million for Super Bowl and World Cup Event

By Robert Haugh

The Santa Clara City Council unanimously approved $1 million to kick off a slate of community events tied to Super Bowl LX and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both global events will take place at Levi’s Stadium, putting Santa Clara back on the world stage.

City staff estimate total costs could reach up to $3 million, but say corporate sponsors will help bring the city’s share down to about $1 million. The money will come from the city’s Budget Stabilization Reserve.

The plan — called the Community Event and Activation Priority List — highlights Santa Clara’s diversity, innovation, and community pride.

Top attractions could possibly include FIFA watch parties, live concerts, night markets, a STEM Bowl, and a community event at Levi’s Stadium.

If approved by FIFA, the city will host up to three major watch parties for World Cup matches not played at Levi’s Stadium. Organizers expect thousands of fans to attend.

Live music will play a big role again. The city hopes to repeat the success of the 2016 Super Bowl concert headlined by Huey Lewis & The News. Venues could include Santa Clara University or Mission College.

Night markets were the most popular idea in community surveys. The city plans to transform 900 Lafayette Street into a downtown plaza with lighting, a stage, and space for food festivals, concerts, and cultural events — a feature that could last well beyond 2026.

The STEM Bowl will return to celebrate Santa Clara’s tech roots, showcasing local innovation through interactive exhibits and student projects.

Art projects will add color citywide. Plans include the “Mission Shines” lighting campaign for businesses, murals and public art, a Sports Legends corridor display, and a giant aerial slogan: “Where the Mission Meets the Moment.”
