The Santa Clara City Council was divided on its support for Measure A, the sales tax increase to fund County services.
Raj Chahal, Albert Gonzales, Suds Jain, and Kevin Park cited the community’s healthcare needs and the importance of the County hospital system. They voted to support the sales tax increase.
Depending on where you’re shopping in the County, the sales tax could increase to 9.75 to 10.5 percent for the next five years.
Mayor Lisa Gillmor, Vice Mayor Kelly Cox, and City Councilmember Karen Hardy did not want the City Council to take an official position on a measure that had not been fully debated in the Council Chambers and is controversial in the community.
Gillmor and Cox voted against supporting the measure. Hardy abstained.
The vote late last night was 4-2-1.

CA and Santa Clara residents just take it in the rear at every turn. These people do not represent you. They represent the dem establishment and the wealthy dems that actually rule over you. Tax tax tax tax it never ends. Think these taxes will benefit any of you? Nope. It WILL benefit the wealthy and the illegal immigrants. Suds Jain and his partners are the architects of Santa Clara’s ⁰ political Black Tulip. Tulip mania in the 17th Century was the first great economic disaster. In the Netherlands in the 1640s, thousands of people speculated on black tulip bulbs. The wide ranging inflation bankrupted most Dutch citizens.
Jain and his allies in 2020 persuaded the 49ers to spend millions in city elections to trump city groups and isolate Lisa Gillmor. The Tulip was district elections.
Jain in December began to get advice and instructions from Chandhok (a captain of the corrupt Johnston regime in Sacramento), to get Santana and Doyle fired, to get the 49ers to receive total control of the stadium, and to defeat Gillmor.
It almost worked. But the poster boy for the Tulip harvest, Becker fell afoul of the law.
Park and Jain are plants infested with aphids of corruption. The mad rush to abolish elections for chief and city clerk fell apart, now Jain’s desire to make parking for everything from cemeteries to churches is also unraveling.
Simply put…
Santa Clara needs to work, and work hard to get Santa Clara back.

Seriously, who best to believe what is best for us… then us.
Better Days are ahead, but it won’t come without some work.

Why did we need the City of Santa Clara to even vote on this? I can make up my own mind and appreciate that Councilmember Hardy had the common sense to abstain. Doesn’t the council have more important projects to focus on?
City should not tell voters hoe to vote. Period.
As Cox said, educate people. Meet in your house!
Hardy voted against measure a being on agenda so vote no on resolution.

Karen Hardy’s abstaining from voting made sense to me. The council was voting on “A Resolution of the City of Santa Clara, California in support of the County of Santa Clara’s Measure A.” If she voted against it, it could be interpreted as her being against Measure A. By abstaining she indicated she’s not taking a position on the measure, at least not as a councilmember.
Only cowards abstain. Take a stance or get off the pot.
I appreciate the common sense of Mayor Gilmor and Vice Mayor Cox. But why did Hardy abstain? If she was against the city taking a position without discussion then vote no. It seems the only things she can make a firm decision on are the things Jed wants. I expected the vote by the other 4. Perhaps if they were actually in touch with the community they’d be able to read the room and find that the majority are tired of being over taxed by out of control governments. The fact that this tax is not solely directed to healthcare is also a problem.
As I said yesterday, VOTE NO ON MEASURE “A” and send a message that we are tired of this crap.
The boys obviously didn’t read your column and comments yesterday, Robert. They do not listen to the people. And Hardy takes the chicken way out and abstained. These are not leaders. Jed certainly knows losers.
Hardy’s mayoral ambition might be showing. If it was a tax to benefit the niners, it would probably be 5-2. Certainly suds has never seen a tax he didn’t like.
