Today is Election Day – Seriously

By Robert Haugh

Santa Clara County voters head to the polls today (Tuesday, December 30, 2025) in an unusual Election Day timed so late in the year that ballots will still be counted in the next year.

The election is a special runoff for County Assessor, the office that oversees the assessment of taxable property countywide.  Current County Assessor Larry Stone retired before the end of his full term.

Two candidates are on the ballot.

Neysa Fligor is the county’s current assistant assessor. She’s campaigning on experience and continuity. She said her background will allow for a seamless transition and immediate readiness to lead.

Rishi Kumar does not have direct experience in the assessor’s office but has a background in tech and local government. He’s pitching a management-and-reform message with a focus on affordability for seniors.

The timing is unusual.  And election officials have acknowledged that turnout may be low, impacted by the holiday week. Polls close at 8 p.m.
