After community protests and warnings about ICE activity, the Santa Clara City Council unanimously approved new restrictions on civil immigration enforcement days before the Super Bowl.
In its approved statement, the Council emphasized that Santa Clara police do not participate in civil immigration enforcement.
Their role during the Super Bowl, the City said, is limited to public safety, emergency response, and crowd control.
Federal officials have indicated there are no plans for immigration enforcement operations connected to Super Bowl events in Santa Clara, according to the statement.
Alongside the statement, the Council adopted City Council Policy 056.
The policy prohibits City-owned or City-controlled facilities, parking lots, garages, and open spaces from being used as staging areas, processing locations, or operational bases for civil immigration enforcement.
The policy directs the City Manager to identify covered properties and post clear signage. City staff will also establish reporting procedures for prohibited activity.
The City will provide standardized signage and “know your rights” materials for private businesses, property owners, and residents.
The policy includes limits.
It does not restrict criminal law enforcement or the execution of valid judicial warrants.
It also includes carve-outs for existing contracts, including stadium agreements.
For Levi’s Stadium, City staff are directed to work with stadium operators and contract partners to implement the policy where legally feasible.
The City said coordination with federal, state, and regional agencies for large events will continue.
City staff acknowledged that the policy will require administrative spending. Costs include signage, staff time, and educational materials.
Levi’s Stadium will host Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8. The Mission City will also host six FIFA World Cup matches this summer.
City officials said the policy is intended to protect community trust while maintaining public safety during major international events.
Last week, Councilmember Kevin Park pushed the Council to adopt the policy by asking for the Tuesday special meeting.
Vice Mayor Albert Gonzalez and Councilmember Kelly Cox co-wrote a memo that outlined why the City should not cooperate with ICE.
Santa Clara is soon to be lost.
Regardless of the most boring Super Bowl ever… and lack of financial benefit to Santa Clarans, our “Mission”-less City virtue-signaled to support illegals and other law-breakers.
Yet, I call upon the Missionless City to ask whether ICE is informed in ANY of the following peoples—regardless of race—have an immigration detainer. “Hispanic” is predominant, but “Black” and “White” and “Asian,” too, any of whom may be breaking the Federal Laws of immigration.
