Santa Clara residents frustrated with the lack of progress on rebuilding Downtown are not blaming just one person or group.
They are blaming almost everyone involved.
In a Santa Clara News Online reader survey, residents were asked: “What/who is the biggest detriment to revitalizing Downtown?”
The top answer was “All of the Above,” with 40 percent of the vote.
City Staff finished second with 21 percent. Councilmember Suds Jain was close behind with 19 percent. “None of the Above” received 12 percent. Reclaiming Our Downtown received 9 percent.
The results show broad frustration with the state of the Downtown effort. But the comments were even sharper than the percentages.
A Santa Clara resident called the Downtown stalemate a “systemic breakdown in leadership, alignment, and accountability.”
“The lack of progress in Downtown is the direct result of collective failure,” the resident wrote. “Elected leadership has not delivered, staff has not executed, and advocacy groups have constrained solutions.”
A District Five resident said the problem is the lack of accountability.
“Downtown does not stall on its own,” the resident wrote. “A lack of urgency, leadership, and coordinated action has allowed opportunities to pass by.”
Those comments reflect a larger concern: Downtown has become a long-running civic promise with little visible progress.
Residents have heard years of discussion about restoring a historic Downtown street grid, bringing back shops and restaurants, and creating a gathering place in the heart of the city.
But there’s been no progress on any item.
A Mission City resident summed up the frustration this way: “Ideas are debated endlessly but little is accomplished.”
Another Santa Clara resident blamed “finger pointing from all sides.”
That may be the clearest takeaway from the survey.
The public does not appear to see the Downtown problem as only a staff issue, only a Suds Jain issue, or only a Reclaiming our Downtown issue.
Mission City residents see a City Hall process that has failed to produce results.

Vartan actually has been working tirelessly on Agrihood Location, Winchester. Which is a downtown community.
At some point, residents should ask why sitting councilmember, SUDS JAIN, also known as ROGER KINT, seems to spend more time fueling anonymous smear campaigns and rewriting history than improving the downtown district he was elected to represent. After six years, where is the vision? Where are the results? The nonstop fixation on attacking the Mayor and others has become embarrassing, unhealthy, and deeply revealing. Santa Clara needs leaders focused on solutions, not bitterness and personal obsession.
