Santa Clara Parade of Champions Returns Saturday With All-Day Festival

By Robert Haugh

One of Santa Clara’s longest-running community traditions returns this weekend.

The 57th Santa Clara Parade of Champions and Festival will take place Saturday, Oct. 3, with activities running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in and around Franklin Square.

The parade itself begins at 11 a.m. and is scheduled to run until about 1 p.m.

The Parade of Champions dates back to 1945, when it was created to welcome home local World War II veterans. The event was later revived after a 24-year hiatus and has again become an annual celebration of Mission City residents, community groups, athletes and local organizations.

This year’s theme highlights Santa Clara’s big year in sports, following Super Bowl LX and the FIFA World Cup matches at Levi’s Stadium.

The day begins with the Breakfast of Champions from 8 to 10 a.m. at American Legion Post 419, 958 Homestead Road. The $15 breakfast is also a fundraiser benefiting veterans.

Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m., followed by the parade at 11 a.m.

This year’s Grand Marshals include Bay FC co-owner and former U.S. Women’s National Team player Leslie Osborne, longtime San Jose Earthquakes player Shea Salinas, and Santa Clara Swim Club CEO and coach Kevin Zacher.

Krazy George Henderson, credited with helping popularize “The Wave,” will serve as an honorary Grand Marshal.

The parade will feature marching and community bands, drill and dance teams, community-built floats, classic cars and vintage military vehicles. Entries will compete for cash prizes, with judging by the Northern California Band Association.

But the festivities don’t end when the parade does.

The Sports FAN Entertainment Zone will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. near Benton and Jackson streets. Organizers are promising interactive sports booths, games, giveaways, mascots, music, youth activities and a new Street Food Market.

A Community Village on Franklin Street will feature businesses, nonprofits, artisans, food trucks and activities for children.

Visitors should also expect street closures around the parade route and downtown festival area. Organizers recommend parking outside the parade route for anyone who needs to leave before festivities end.

More information, including maps, parking information and the full schedule, is available on the Santa Clara Parade of Champions website.
