Santa Clara Sporting 17U Boys Playing for National Youth Soccer Championship

By Robert Haugh

Santa Clara Sporting’s 17U 02 Green Boys team is playing this week in the prestigious U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Overland Park, Kansas.

Over 10,000 teams in the nation are eligible.  But only the top 104 teams in 14 age groups are invited to the championships.

The top two teams in each bracket will advance to the semifinals this Saturday. The next day, July 28, the top two teams in each age group will play for the championship.

Santa Clara Sporting Soccer Club is one of the most successful youth soccer programs in the nation. Since its founding in 1971, the club has sent numerous teams to the Regional and National Championships.

This year, 11 Sporting teams were represented at the Far West Regionals. Wow. The 17U Boys this year represent the fourth time a Sporting team has made it this far. Double wow.

We’ll continue to cover them as they make the Mission City proud. They should definitely get invited and honored at a City Council meeting for their great success so far. And invited to be in the Santa Clara Parade of Champions.
