Santa Clara University Men’s Basketball is Back, Biggest Game Tonight

By Robert Haugh

Santa Clara University men’s basketball team is 15-3. They’re off to the best start since the 1977-78 season.

Tonight, they will face their biggest test when they travel to Gonzaga and face the number-one ranked team in the nation.

Let’s hope the Broncos take their best game north and upset the Bulldogs. That would make the mens’ basketball program’s greatest player proud.

The Broncos record is no fluke. They have wins over two PAC 12 schools:  Washington State and Cal.

Last Saturday, Santa Clara beat Saint Mary’s, 67-66 — at Saint Mary’s!  The Broncos snapped a losing streak to the Gaels that goes all the way back to 2015.

The Broncos have a lot of depth. Seven players average at least 7 points per game. Sophomore guard Trey Wertz is the leading scorer and averages over 12 points per game.

The next time the team plays in Santa Clara is Saturday, January 18, at 6 p.m. against the University of the Pacific

At the end of the month, Gonzaga comes to the Mission City for a big game. That’s on Thursday, January 30.

Here’s the site for tickets.

Go Broncos!
