Best and Worst of the Week in Santa Clara: Former City Attorney Brian Doyle and the 49er Five

By Robert Haugh

The Good — The Leg Drop Award

Brian Doyle’s last week as City Attorney was this week. But he had a good run defending the Mission City. We can thank Doyle for many things, especially leading the effort to stop the 49ers from lowering their own rent. That was a swing of $180 million in our favor. It also means that Levi’s Stadium won’t become a financial burden on Santa Clara the way that the Oakland Coliseum is on Oakland. Thank you for your service, Brian Doyle.

The Bad — The Jabroni Award:

The 49er Five really screwed things up. First, Councilman Anthony Becker put in writing that he wanted a closed-door meeting and no transparency. Wow. Then, he was joined by Councilmen Raj Chahal, Suds Jain, and Kevin Park who put in writing that there was “no cause” to let Doyle go. Double wow. Finally, they were joined by Councilwoman Karen Hardy who voted to fire a popular City Attorney. Triple wow and triple Jabroni Award this week.

  1. I believe Becker would be the easiest to recall as he’s just a carpetbagger. He just rolled into district 6 and rented a room. Then Kevin Park, nobody likes him and I can’t imagine anybody in the district would stick up for him.

    • Don’t leave out Jain. He repeatedly lied to his constituents about being able to vote on important issues that matter to District 5.

  2. I wonder if Brian could sue them for wrongful termination …

*And*, I hope the 49-er 5 get tossed out on their collective butts next election. But I suspect Santa Clarans aren’t that smart, unfortunately.
