Former Santa Clara Councilwoman Jamie McLeod-Skinner Poised to Win Oregon Congressional Primary

By Robert Haugh

The final votes haven’t been tallied, but it looks like Jamie McLeod-Skinner is poised to win the Democratic primary in Oregon’s 5th Congressional District.

She’s leading 61-39 in the early results and projected to win by some Oregon and national political experts.

From 2004 to 2012, McLeod-Skinner served as a member of the Santa Clara City Council.

She was one of the leaders opposing the 49ers stadium election in 2010.

In mid April, Mayor Lisa Gillmor and Councilwoman Kathy Watanabe helped McLeod-Skinner raise money at the home of former Councilwoman Teresa O’Neill. Kudos to them.

They were joined by former Councilman Will Kennedy who served with McLeod and was also an anti-stadium campaign leader.

If the vote margin holds up, McLeod-Skinner will defeat Congressman Kurt Schrader, who has represented the 5th District since 2009. Wow.

As the incumbent, Schrader had the endorsement of President Joe Biden and some PACs who spent millions of dollars on his behalf.

McLeod-Skinner had the endorsement of Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and the local democratic committees.
