Virtual Community Meeting About Temporary Housing Proposal for Lawrence and Benton

By Robert Haugh

The County of Santa Clara is hosting a virtual community meeting today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. about a proposal for a temporary housing project slated for the vacant property at the corner of Benton and Lawrence Expressway in Santa Clara.

The County of Santa Clara and LifeMoves are working to create more shelter for unhoused people. The proposed project would have 80-120 units including on-site support services for people staying there.

According to their website, LifeMoves “is dedicated to helping individuals and families experiencing homelessness to return to stable housing and self-sufficiency.  We do this by providing interim housing, supportive services, and building collaborative partnerships.”

LifeMoves opened a temporary housing project in Mountain View in 2021, with other projects slated to open in Redwood City, Palo Alto and San Jose soon.

  1. I am very disturbed by the City not having a vote on this Issue as the City did not have a vote when they tore down our City in the 60’s we had a great downtown with many shops and a Movie theater and they told us they would rebuild within 2 years never happened. Now we are faced with having a building for with no vote and that is probably because the niners own us. Sobrato is the builder and all the hard work that many residents have put will be overlooked because the Niners own us. I have been here since 1944 and it is sad what has happened to our beautiful Santa Clara. Thank-you my Neighbors ,all of you for the hard work you have put in trying to show this Council that this is not economically and feasibly wrong for this area. I don’t think we stand a chance in Hell of defeating it and when they say it will not effect our Property values I have been a Realtor for 47 years YES IT Will .
I believe the Just would be let us VOTE and then decide.
