Santa Clara Ends Year with $36 Million Budget Surplus

By Robert Haugh

Santa Clara’s budget is looking positive and recovering from the pandemic.

City staff presented information last night that projects a $36 million surplus.

Approximately $25 million of the surplus is due to increased revenues.

Approximately $17 million of the surplus is a result of cost-cutting measures taken during previous years.

The City Council approved City staff recommendations on how to allocate the surplus.

Editor’s Note: Last night’s meeting ran late due to a lot of speakers commenting during public testimony. Other items will reviewed later this week.

  1. Why are council members talking about lawn bowling amenities when the city could be saving money for a rainy day?

  2. I’d be curious as to what the forecast is for the future. Both CA and SF are in the dumper as far as that goes, with big deficits coming.

  3. It the cost savings in part comes from cost cutting measures, then it must include cutting library and staffing hours. Going forward these savings will not be available (we hope!). But this does lead to the question — why was the Council in a previous meeting trying to come up with a way to increase income through bond or other measures?
