In December 2023, Indicted City Councilmember Anthony Becker led the effort to put Measures A and B on the ballot.  

He made the motion and said no to requests to make the ballot language more understandable to voters.

So now now March 5, 2024, Santa Clarans will decide if they want to keep the right to elect the City Clerk (Measure A) and Police Chief (Measure B).

Two campaigns have been up and running for a few months to persuade voters.

But one person has been conspicuously absent from the Yes campaigns, even though he put them on the ballot and has spoken strongly about the issues during City Council meetings.

In December, Becker claimed switching to appointed positions would be “securing us from corruption and politics.” 

Quite the irony coming from the one accused of felony charges of leaking a confidential grand Jury report to the 49ers, an entity that spent over $2 million to try to get him elected Mayor last year.

Now, Becker isn’t even on the Yes on A or B websites.

Becker hasn’t been featured in any 49er advertising either like he has been in previous years.

In November, the team ran ads promoting Councilmembers Suds Jain and Kevin Park, but not Becker. Jain and Park are both up for re-election. 

Becker would be on the ballot this year. But because of his indictment and trial for felony perjury starting in April, Becker has told people he’s not running.

Becker had lost two Santa Clara elections until 49er owner Jed York set up a $1 million independent expenditure campaign in 2020 to help get Becker elected to the City Council.

Now, York won’t even acknowledge Becker questions in a press conference.
