It looks like the 49ers have decided to support George Guerra for the District Six City Council seat. That means they finally cut ties with indicted City Councilmember Anthony Becker whose trial is starting soon for allegedly leaking a Grand Jury report to the team and lying about it.
Recently, Guerra told numerous Santa Clara residents that he’s not the 49er-supported candidate. He was overheard at the Art and Wine Festival this past weekend claiming that Santa Clara News Online (SCNO) reports were erroneous.
Guerra also denied to SCNO that he was an ally and confidant to Becker. But emails from two years ago tell a different story.
Guerra did not respond to a request for comment for this story.

TV ads started running in the last 48 hours showing Guerra’s denials were false.
Here’s a screenshot of the bottom of the ad that shows the team is in fact supporting Guerra.

The independent expenditure on behalf of Guerra filed a report yesterday with the City Clerk’s office for the media buy as required by law.
Interestingly, they did not change the Committee’s name. It still says that the committee was created to “Oppose (Kelly) Cox.”

It’s possible that it was a clerical error. Or someone in the campaign made a mistake and revealed the support for Guerra earlier than they were supposed to. Whoops.
Santa Clarans were speculating that the 49ers wanted to hide the fact that they support Guerra because they did not want to offend Becker while he is on trial for leaking a Grand Jury report to them. Becker might point fingers at team executives or consultants if it helps him reduce the charges against him or any time he might have to serve if found guilty.
Kelly Cox is the non-Becker, non-49er candidate in the race. She describes herself on her website as “a single mom, Santa Clara advocate, assistant dean, grad student, and mediocre bartender who wants to serve our city with integrity.”

Dana, thank you for filling us in. It is nice to have some background and the person you describe sounds like it would be a great addition to our council.
Here is a question. 49ers took million back from schools. How is Albert Gonzalez, a school trustee comfortable with that miney being taken to support his candidacy?
To summarize – The candidate choices for D6 are: a soon-to-be-convicted fellow, a serial liar, or a bartender/grad student??? Why is SC not getting the best and brightest?
Insane in the membrane
Ted, I take exception to your comments for two reasons.
1. How can you offhandedly disqualify a person because they are “…a bartender/grad student”? You make it sound like that automatically disqualifies hers as being among the best and brightest.
2. It takes a lot of guts to go up against the 49er machine. Do you not live in this district and are running in your own district? Or are you sitting this one out? I just think your comments regarding Cox is not called for, unless you know more than you are saying.
Ted, you are correct on the first two. On the last one you missed. She’s the assistant dean of the school of engineering at SCU. She is currently working on her Masters degree. A single mom of 2 great kids who works multiple jobs to insure that her kids have all they need. I’ve worked with her in the Parks & Rec commission and the Police Chiefs Advisory committee. She is consistently the best prepared person in the room at every meeting. She asks relevant questions in order to be better informed. She isn’t afraid to rock the boat when necessary. She is her own person and will represent us with integrity and respect. She has no desire to be a career politician, just to serve her city and help make it a better place for all of us. We need more people like Kelly Cox who is not afraid to put herself out there and deal with all the BS that being in the political arena brings on. Plain and simple, Kelly is a badass. We’d be fortunate to have her elected to represent District 6
Hmm. Ocasio Cortex is now a senior member of Congress. She was a bartender.
Park is now a Mental Health Advocate
So?
Really fake Ted?? When was the last time you heard Becker not complain about being a renter? Or working 3 jobs to support his family? His time on the council is probably the longest gig he’s been lucky to have. Go back and watch the council meeting where Kelly calls out Becker for not reappointing Burt Field to the Parks&Rec commission. That will show you someone who belongs on the City Council. Kick a$$ Kelly Girl!
Bought and paid.

Listen, I never said she was not some sort of badass or incredible single mom/provider/parent of amazing kids. I’ve no doubt she is. However, the ability to feed/care for our children is now the baseline criteria for city council? Really? Assistant dean – great job, not disparaging that. BUT – this is not a prestigious academic position.
So rather than be defensive, ask your self, what civic or leadership or community building qualifications does Kelly have? That, in my opinion, qualifies a candidate to represent 20,000 people.
Dana C. – Interesting points – I’m staying open minded to this.
Howard – Yes, I’m sitting this our out, like you’ve sat out the past 30 years.
Ted, really…. give it a rest.
Anyone running for office right now knows before they ever declare it will be a brutal beating.
You demean, criticize and minimize people who are doing all that they can to help our City. For that, shame on you.
You owe Ms. Kelly Cox at least an apology for such a careless comment.
Funny just this morning I was educated to learn that one of our Past Presidents was also a Bartender before they were a President.
So there…..
Who knows where Ms. Cox may take this opportunity to run for office.

I am saddened that, if true, this Candidate has accepted the terms like Lando Calrissian selling out to evil Darth “Jed York” Vader to join the “dark side” of the 49er 5.

As I wound my way to the back parking lot of this year’s Art and Wine Fest, I had a brief but insightful conversation with city council hopeful George Guerra. He told me all about being a longtime resident of Santa Clara (I think he said 50 years) and how he raised his kids here.
Guerra and I also discussed the 49ers and expressed my frustration with how the team continues to insert itself into local politics for their financial gains and the challenges facing our community. I specifically told him I thought it was great to see a candidate who wasn’t being corrupted by the 49er’s political donations and how refreshing it would be to have more balance on the council with someone fighting for the interests of Santa Clara residents. Guerra nodded in agreement as I expressed my disdain for disgraced council member Anthony Becker and his questionable choice to continue acting as a public servant while indicted on felony charges. I was excited by what he told me and mentioned that since the 49ers were not endorsing him, I would spread his message to my fellow voters to support his campaign. I shook his hand, looked him in the eye, and even accepted one of his door hangers.
It was a blow to discover that George Guerra, the one we thought was our champion of local interests, had become just another pawn in the 49ers’ political game. His acceptance of substantial financial backing from the corporation raises serious questions about his integrity and his commitment to our community’s needs over the 49ers’ corporate interests.
Guerra’s swift transformation from a concerned resident to a beneficiary of 49ers’ money is a betrayal to every voter who believed in his sincerity. It’s high time we, as residents, demand genuine representation that prioritizes our community over the 49ers’ political agenda. The future of Santa Clara hinges on it.
George Guerra told you a bold faced lie and then shook your hand on it. Sounds like Jed’s perfect 49er candidate. Shame on George Guerra. Shame on every candidate who is allowing a campaign to be funded for them by the 49ers. How do they sleep at night?
The 49er-financed negative ads against Kelly Cox have been deeply deceptive and full of manipulated misogynistic images. They are insulting to the intelligence of Santa Clara voters. If George has any sense of decency he will publicly condemn this high-priced false advertising campaign and instead run on the issues that are important to Santa Clarans.
Misogynistic means a hatred or mistrust of women. Apparently you didn’t know that before commenting.
