Polling in Santa Clara Elections by the 49ers (Likely) and Others

By Robert Haugh

Santa Clara currently has four competitive City Council races, a Police Chief contest, and a City Clerk competition.

There’s a lot of political activity in the Mission City, including some polling.

Santa Clara News Online (SCNO) has received some information about polling likely done by the 49ers in a few races.

Here’s some information from District Five where a poll was done testing only positive “push questions” about Suds Jain and only negative “push questions” about David Kertes, Jain’s opponent.

The team’s independent expenditure is backing Jain. It looks like they’re trying to position him as an affordable housing champion and an environmental leader.

The 49ers are trying to position Kertes as a Mayor Lisa Gillmor ally.  Interestingly, they are recycling a hit piece from two years ago that’s false. The City Council never voted on any trips taken by the City Manager Deanna Santana

The 49ers are also taking a shot at the Related Companies owner Stephen Ross as “Trump’s billionaire developer friend.”

The next NFL owners meeting should be interesting because Ross is also the owner of the Miami Dolphins. Let’s hope they don’t sit him next to Jed York at the meeting.

The Related Companies has also set up an independent expenditure to help City Council candidates, including Kertes in District Five. But people tracking independent expenditure spending say that the company will spend a fraction of what the 49ers are spending.

Currently, the team has spent approximately $1.6 million in the four races.  In 2020, they spent approximately $4 million in four council races.

The Santa Clara Police Officers and Firefighters are also supporting Kertes in District Five. But they too are spending a fraction of what the team is spending.

SCNO has heard from other residents about polling done by text and phone calls that’s much more neutral than the District Five polling shared with SCNO.

In those contacts, the pollster is just asking about voting preferences without asking push questions.

In the past, the Police Officers Association has done polling in Santa Clara political races.  A representative would not confirm or deny they are behind the current polling.

SCNO could not reach representatives for Related or the Firefighters by our deadline.

  1. Andrew, I did not slam the door but stood on my porch and talked with them for about 10 min. I was civil but wanted them to know, face to face, how we felt about what they are doing. Suds had the nerve to say he would win w/o 49er money. (what else could he say?) I told him if he did win he should have the ethics to recuse himself on any vote involving the stadium or team. He didn’t think that was necessary, of course. When they mentioned the Miami Dolphins were supporting Kertes I expressed surprise. After they explained the connection I just had to laugh. I don’t mind engaging the candidates, I might learn something. Like how the Miami Dolphins are trying to take over Santa Clara. 😉

  2. Andrew
Polling done by INDEPENDENT COMMITTEE using talking points that Sudds used?

He is not supposed to know them.

  3. The idea that anyone would run for Santa Clara City Council for the purpose of helping Lisa Gillmor willy nilly spend taxpayer dollars is absurd. Kelly Cox, David Kertes, Teresa O’Neill and Satish Chandra have made a courageous decision to help stop the damage done by the current Council majority, knowing that they would have to endure an out-of-state billionaire family’s smear campaign. Let’s hope Santa Clara voters are not so uninformed that they will fall for the 49ers’ pulp.

    • “District 5 Voter” is 100% correct.
These four brave souls have voluntarily ventured into uncharted territories.
They all have my respect, and that is also why I have chosen to show my support with “Boots on the Ground”.
If I am available, I am walking Districts and meeting residents.
Also I just got invited to a Meet and Greet with District 6 Candidate Kelly Cox,
      Sunday October 20th from 4:30 to 6:30.
Send me a email or text and I can send you the info as well.

25 more days to Nov 5th. Now is the time to get active.

    • Not falling for it at all. In fact, everyone I talk to is aboard with getting new blood in and ousting the “bought” old guys. We need a “reset” of the SC City Council. Related to that mindset is the backfiring of a lot of the smear campaign ads/literature. If anything, they are having the opposite effect as Santa Clarans are questioning the ethics of those willing to stoop that low, plus the source of the funding to generate and pay for such unfounded claims. It’s not a mystery, and hasn’t been ever since all the 49er law suits with our city began. We once had plenty of money in our coffers, but, since the stadium was built, have been hemorrhaging. The new candidates are acknowledging the fact that we need to establish contracts with the 49ers that would be reasonable and beneficial to the residents. This is not a 49ers vs. Santa Clara battle; we simply need to forge a symbiotic path forward.

  6. And these are coming via text from Guerra (most likely sponsored by Jed York)

Hi xxxx, this is Riley with http://www.votegeorgeguerra.com supporting George Guerra for Santa City Clara City Council! George Guerra is a longtime Santa Clara resident and local leader focused on enhancing our quality of life. George served on the Parks and Recreation Commission for 8 years, fixing parks and infrastructure, developing communal green spaces, and supporting Santa Clara youth sports. Be sure to vote for George Guerra by November 5th and ensure sure that your voice is heard!

    Reply STOP to opt-out

    • George Guerra at a Parks and Rec Commission meeting wanted to bulldoze Ulistac for the soccer park. I initially opposed YSP in 1998. But it has been a tremendous asset. I can admit when I am wrong. YSP deserves to be supported. So does Ulistac. Guerra almost ruined both.

  7. Suds and his buddy running for clerk stopped by my house. Among other things they told me that Kertes was backed by the Miami Dolphins. When pressed they admitted the ‘connection’.

    • I just laughed out loud! Suds has the nerve to say that? What lies will he and Kelly think of next!? Hope you slammed door in their face.
