The San Francisco 49ers are considering selling a 10 percent stake in the team, according to a report from Sports Business Journal.
The franchise, valued at over $9 billion, could garner more than $900 million.
CEO Jed York is leading the exploratory talks. But no final decision has been made on potential buyers, possibly private equity funds or individual investors.
The DeBartolo family initially bought the team for $13 million in 1977.
Eddie DeBartolo Jr. lost control of the 49ers in 2000 after a scandal. He was involved in a bribery case with Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards.
That scandal led to his suspension from NFL ownership. His sister, Denise DeBartolo York, and her husband, John York, took over the team after the fallout.
Jed became CEO of the San Francisco 49ers in 2012.
Jed has led the effort to take over the Santa Clara City Council by spending millions of dollars on political campaigns. His efforts have led to at least one scandal.
Former Vice Mayor Anthony Becker was convicted of felony perjury for leaking a Grand Jury report to the team and lying about it. He faces possible prison time and will be sentenced next month.

It’s very interesting that the 49ers held back on this news that they would have an influx of hundreds of millions of dollars until after they had bamboozled City staff into recommending that the City subsidize their money-losing deal with FIFA. There is still no agreement on the Super Bowl. Let’s see how City staff is going to advocate that the City subsidize that one.
