Santa Clara residents consider the Golden State Warriors’ Joe Lacob and Peter Guber the best team owners in Bay Area history.
Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. ranks second, way ahead of the current 49ers owners, the York family.
That’s according to a Santa Clara News Online survey that tested the same question asked in a column by the San Francisco Chronicle’s Ann Killion.
Killion also concluded that the current 49ers owners don’t belong anywhere near the top of that list.
“While the Yorks have become fabulously wealthy, and the franchise is now valued by Forbes at $8.6 billion, the owners haven’t exactly been good caretakers or community members, buying up the Santa Clara City Council and refusing to be transparent about finances with the city,” wrote Killion.
“The York family doesn’t belong in the best ownership group.”
Santa Clara residents agree. Here is the breakdown of the voting:
- 1st Place (63%): Joe Lacob and Peter Guber (Golden State Warriors, 2010–Present)
- 2nd Place (21%): Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. (SF 49ers, 1977–2000)
- 3rd Place (11%): Peter Magowan (SF Giants, 1993–2008)
- 4th Place (5%): The York Family (SF 49ers, 2000–Present)
- 5th Place (0%): The Haas Family (Oakland A’s, 1981–1995)

Not Surprsing that the Warriors are number one. Their ownership is committed both to the team and the community. Workplace culture is very good too. Personally I think the Haas family should be above the Yorks
Wow….I didn’t know the York Family had that many people who could vote for themselves?
Well apparently they are still better viewed that the Oakland A’s were viewed while being run under the leadership of Mr. Charlie “O” Finley.
Small family fact, my Great Uncle, Joe Bowman actually worked for Mr. Finley in KC. As I’ve learned he was a remarkably great Baseball Scout.
He also lost the 1st Night Game in MLB History.
