Another Special Santa Clara City Council Meeting to Fill Boards and Commissions

By Robert Haugh

The Santa Clara City Council has another special meeting Tuesday.

This one is much narrower than last week’s packed agenda. But it still matters.

Councilmembers are scheduled to interview applicants and fill vacancies on several City boards and commissions. The special meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers and online.

The agenda includes nine appointments across six boards and commissions.

Some of the appointments are competitive. Others are not. In a few cases, the number of applicants matches the number of open seats.

The full agenda includes:

  • Action to interview applicants and appoint two members to the Senior Advisory Commission. One seat is a partial term ending June 30, 2028. The other is a full term ending June 30, 2030. Candidates are Rachel Maria Ervin, Claire Fedele, Adila Saadat, Michelle Schmitz, Kirankumar Shinde and Kumar Viswanathan.
  • Action to accept a resignation and appoint two members to the Civil Service Commission. One seat is a partial term ending June 30, 2028. The other is a full term ending June 30, 2030. Candidates are Sherl Chambliss and Anurag Dixit.
  • Action to appoint one member to the Cultural Commission for a full term ending June 30, 2030. Candidates are Sandip Bhattacharya, Ana Vargas-Smith, Kumar Viswanathan and Shawn Williams.
  • Action to appoint one member to the Board of Library Trustees for a full term ending June 30, 2030. The only candidate listed is Marilyn Edelstein.
  • Action to appoint two members to the Historical and Landmarks Commission for full terms ending June 30, 2030. Candidates are Ruhina Surendran and Kumar Viswanathan.
  • Action to appoint one member to the Parks and Recreation Commission for a full term ending June 30, 2030. Candidates are Sukrit Ganesh, Satish Chandra, Tyrrell Nelson, Shahid Shaikh and Kirankumar Shinde.

Several applicants applied for more than one commission.

The agenda packet says the City advertised the vacancies through the City website, social media and the Santa Clara Weekly. The City Clerk’s Office also notified people on the vacancy interest list.

The next regular Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7.
