Spain’s World Cup Victory Draws Big Crowd to Outdoor Santa Clara Watch Party

By Robert Haugh

Thousands of Santa Clarans gathered to watch Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday at a City-organized Watch Party located at the corner of Homestead and Lafayette.

The Spaniards defeated defending champion Argentina 1-0 after extra time in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute.

Spain controlled possession and created most of the chances, but goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez kept Argentina alive with a series of saves.

This was likely the final World Cup appearance for the legendary Lionel Messi whose tournament ended in disappointment as Argentina failed to repeat its 2022 triumph.

Spain is the champion for the first time since 2010. They completed the tournament unbeaten and conceded only one goal in eight matches.
