Stan’s Donuts Still Open Despite Mercury News Report

By Robert Haugh

Santa Clara’s legendary Stan’s Donuts is still open for business.

The Mercury News mistakenly reported three days ago that the Mission City business closed. That upset a lot of Stan’s loyal customers. But that story has been deleted from the site.

But the paper corrected themselves two days ago. But not before we heard from a lot of Stan’s loyal customers who were upset about the bad reporting.

It also demonstrates once again how the Mercury News frequently makes mistakes about cities outside of San Jose’s borders, especially Santa Clara.

Looks like they misread a press release about the closing of another Stan’s Donuts Los Angeles even though it’s clear in the first sentence. Whoops.

That business is located in Westwood near the UCLA campus. It’s a 5-hour drive and 343 miles south of Santa Clara Stan’s Donuts. Double whoops.

Our Stan’s Donuts has been open since 1959 serving great donuts and our community. During the COVID-19 crisis, they’re serving customers take-out only. They’re open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2628 Homestead Road.

Get there early for the best selection. And don’t be surprised if the chocolate donuts go quickly.

Editor’s Note: Remember to support other local businesses during the COVID-19 crisis.

  1. Glazed donut, a classic, delicious, filling and old school. Truly a Santa Clara Pastime! I agree about the other commenters here on their favs….. those too are exceptionally mouth watering.
I think there is a special place in everyones heart for Stan’s in Santa Clara.

Keep on supporting our local businesses if you can my friends. It important to keep this country and city in business.

  2. Chocolate bars for me. Must admit even the plain cakes are special.
Over the years It’s been fun for me to see former Santa Clara residents light up when the conversation of Stan’s comes up. Each and every one of them has a special story or memory they just have to share.
Does anyone know the year that the business moved to it’s current location. If my memory is correct they were originally closer to the grocery store and the Five and Dime store.

    • Your memory is correct. They were closer to the middle of the strip mall. I grew up right around the corner from Stans. Spent many a summer afternoon belly up to the indoor lunch counter eating bowls full of their great french fries back in the 60s. a great time and place to be a kid!

  3. I didn’t know about the apple fritters. I’ve had them before but thought they discontinued them. Good to know. I love the jelly!
Stan’s us the best I’ve had anywhere. I have to limit myself otherwise….

Thanks Robert for clearing things up.
