49er Five Refute Grand Jury Report, Won’t Allow Dissenting Opinion

By Robert Haugh

The Santa Clara City Council met last night to finalize their response to October’s Civil Grand Jury report that accused the 49er Five of selling out Santa Clara to the 49ers.

The Council majority approved an official City response to the Grand Jury that refuted all of the report’s findings. Yup, all of them.

The vote was 4-2.

Councilmembers Anthony Becker, Raj Chahal, Karen Hardy, and Suds Jain voted in the majority.

Mayor Lisa Gillmor and Councilmember Kathy Watanabe voted against it.

“This report (response) protects the five members of this Council, said Watanabe. “The best interests of the City are not being looked after.”

“This Council cannot police themselves,” said Gillmor.

Coucilmember Kevin Park was absent.

Park made it clear that he shared the Council majority’s opinion about the report’s findings in an earlier meeting.

In a Council meeting on November 16 to discuss the report’s findings in detail, Park said he and the 49er Five did nothing wrong.

Gillmor and Watanabe requested that they be allowed to submit a minority report or dissenting opinion. But the Council majority objected to the idea.

The response to the Grand Jury will include a mention of the 4-2 vote but no details on a dissenting opinion.

  1. 14,000+ voters support Becker and these types of antics. Yes, they are in support of this!

Let that sink in for a moment.

  2. Investigations should take place and criminal or civil referrals should be made to the DA’s office. Just like what was done with Laurie Smith.

  3. Gees! Teflon Dons right here in River City. Now all 5 have benefited from Jed Clampett. The destruction of our fair city continues.

  4. Of course, the 49er five will refute the Grand Jury report. They have been caught in so many lies. Why would they stop now? In my opinion, the 49ers own them.
