Indicted Santa Clara Vice Mayor Anthony Becker Trial Delayed to April

By Robert Haugh

Indicted Santa Clara Vice Mayor Anthony Becker got his trial delayed again last week.

Becker was indicted almost a year ago, in April 2023 for leaking a Grand Jury report to the 49ers and lying about it, a felony perjury offense.

If convicted, Becker could spend up to four years behind bars. He waived his right to a speedy trial in May 2023.

Last Friday, Becker returned to court and his deputy public defender Christopher Montoya asked for more time to prepare.

The trial was set for March 4, 2024.  Judge Elizabeth Peterson set the new trial date for April 22.

Becker got an extra month but wanted a lot more.

Becker has received numerous delays to his trial with many local political and legal experts believing he’s trying to stay on the City Council as long as possible to vote on 49er issues and collect an income.

Becker receives $2,000 per month from Santa Clara taxpayers for being on the Council and doesn’t have other employment.

Becker’s term expires in December 2024. He will have to declare his re-election in July 2024.

But Becker has told confidants that he’s not running.  And the 49ers just recently stopped supporting him with their advertising.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, prosecutors stated that the District Attorney’s crime lab is processing data seized from former 49er Executive Vice President Rahul Chandhok’s electronic devices.

Chandhok left the team for a job with USA Soccer shortly after Becker’s indictment.

Becker has voted on numerous significant issues since he was indicted and continues to create controversy and discord in the Council chambers.

  1. Tony’s Day of Reckoning moved from March 4th to AFTER the March 5th “Special Election.” Judge Elizabeth Peterson delayed it a month so as not to interfere with Jed York’s machinations on Measures A and B. She was appointed by Jerry Brown, never had a “real” (non-legal) job, and is due for re-election in 2025. Bet that Jed York will fund her re-election…. Santa Clara corruption is deep.

  2. There are people facing crimminal penalties who deserve punishment. People who mistreat children or animals should be shot. There are also people facing prosecution who are tragically there for horrible misfortune. They deserve mercy.

Then there are petty useless people. BECKER

Chandhok should be there along with Jain. These three are embarrasments.

    Make no mistake.
