A passenger in a vehicle stopped by Santa Clara police over the weekend died after suffering a medical emergency during the traffic stop, according to the Santa Clara Police Department.

The incident began at about 10:15 p.m. near Central Expressway and Corvin Drive, close to the Sunnyvale city limit.

According to an SCPD press release Wednesday, a patrol officer observed a traffic violation involving a vehicle with two occupants and pulled the vehicle over.

Police said both the driver and passenger got out of the vehicle and followed the officer’s commands while standing along the side of the road.

SCPD said the officer did not use force against either person.

Moments later, the passenger suffered what police described as a medical emergency.

The officer immediately provided first aid, according to police. Santa Clara Fire Department paramedics arrived and continued life-saving efforts.

The man was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not released the man’s identity or additional information about the medical emergency.

SCPD notified the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office under its officer-involved incident protocol.

The Police Department and District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation.

SCPD said it expects to release additional information as the investigation continues.
