Santa Clara This Week: Controversial Interim Housing Proposal Continues and Indicted Anthony Becker Returns to Court

By Robert Haugh

This will be a big week in Santa Clara.

On Tuesday, the City Council will consider approving a controversial interim housing proposal at Lawrence and Benton.  The meeting starts at 5 p.m. It’s the only item on the agenda.

It was continued from last week because there was so much public testimony.

On Wednesday, indicted City Councilmember Anthony Becker returns to court to enter his plea against charges that he leaked a Grand Jury report to the 49ers and the Silicon Valley Voice and then lied about it.

Becker appeared in court two weeks ago but was given more time to find a private attorney. Two weeks ago, he was represented by public defender Christopher Montoya.

Becker is being charged with a misdemeanor and felony perjury.

  1. Orange Jumpsuit… just try to image that for a short period of time this person was almost our Mayor. Just under 700 registered voters separate our Mayor and now someone who is being looked at doing some time behind bars.
Try and imagine if he had won… we would now be looking at having 49er City Council Member Kevin Park as our Acting Mayor. Talk about a misnomer, nothing about that statement sounds good. Kevin Park, or him Acting like a Mayor.
So after the Recall, how about we work on Election Reform as a long term answer?
Remember, Santa Clara has 31 more years of dealing with this one tenant.
Maybe the view from behind bars might be a good view for the former 49er Council Member.
Am I being harsh, far from it.
My Mayor, Lone City Council Person, and of course our wonderful Police Chief will always have my support.
Why… simple, they are looking out for the best for all of us, not one company.
Maybe the best thing that has come out of all of this negative stuff has been getting to meet so many great people who also live in our City.
How awesome to know that so many people love our City and are willing to work to keep it that way.
Makes me proud to be a lifelong resident.
In the end, that one point needs to be Celebrated.
We will most likely have a lot of work that needs to be done before we get there, but count me in.

  2. Becker commits crimes against the public and then has a Public Defender at our expense?

This pretender to the Political Class and wannabe “leader” needs a significant time out in County Jail to consider his choices.

  3. It will be interesting if the council actually decides anything about the housing. Waiting for Jed to weigh in and all…

    • mrhmyers,
