Usually, the hiring of a Santa Clara City Attorney is a unanimous decision and there’s not much controversy.
But last night when the Santa Clara City Council appointed Glen Googins as the new City Attorney, there was dissension.
The vote was 5-2 with the 49er Five voting as a bloc to select Googins.
Mayor Lisa Gillmor and Councilmember Kathy Watanabe voted against his hiring.
They both said that their vote was not personal and was not a reflection of Googins’ professional capabilities.
They objected to the decision by the 49er Five to fire former City Attorney Brian Doyle for no cause in the summer of 2021.
“It’s been a bad decision from the beginning by firing an employee for no cause,” said Gillmor.
The decision to terminate Doyle has been costly for the City. And the final amount may not be known yet.
The 49er Five approved Googins’s annual salary of $345,000. That’s a big raise for him. He earned $231,000 in salary last year as Chula Vista’s City Attorney.

The above figures imply that Googins is realizing a 49% increase in base salary moving from the City of Chula Vista to the City of Santa Clara. The average home price in the City of Santa Clara is almost double (96% higher) and median Santa Clara County income is 59% higher than San Diego County.
A 49% increase? Just cause the 49er 5 approved the annual salary doesn’t mean he’s qualified to do the job.49% increase makes you wonder? Coincidence? Jed, are you pulling strings again?
Another person leaving California and going to Texas. Makes sense.

Santana correctly reminds Jain that council has not voted to do this.

So the March 2021 emails from Santana and Jain, Jain to an outisde lawyer regarding Doyle, have been forwarded to Jeff Rosen as they all show clear councilmanic interfence. Jain sees himself as the Great Elf King sent to bring Santa Clara into the Grand Corridor.

FWIW, the City has shelled out a hella lot of moola like $1M over the last year to attorneys who don’t know what’s going on and settled cases they had no business settling. Then you got Doyle with a claim. More $$$$$! Becker and Jain keeps yelling stop the bleeding. Hey Becker and Jain, you’ve got a gusher!
That explains why the public works department has to budget and cut back and can’t get a raise.
Suds Jain on March 30, 2021 sent emails disclosing comments Doyle made in closed session. On March 16, 2021, Jain was already enlisting investigations on Doyle.
