SF Chronicle: Jed York Turned From 49ers Football to Santa Clara Politics, Scandal Followed

By Robert Haugh

In the week before the Super Bowl, Jed York is getting some major scrutiny about his role in Santa Clara political scandals.

The San Francisco Chronicle published a blocker buster of a story on Sunday online. It was written by award-winning reporters Ron Kroichick and Lance Williams.

You can read the entire piece here courtesy of Microsoft News. It’s not behind a paywall. It’ll probably be in the print edition today.

Anthony Becker, Jed York and Rahul Chandhok

Here are some highlights or lowlights:

A 49er source says that things started going well on the operations’ football side because York wasn’t running things.

“Jed got out of the way,” said one source familiar with the 49ers’ business and political affairs. “He got out of football, and that has worked.”

Ouch.

But York had to have something to do. So he got busy with the Mission City.

York’s involvement in Santa Clara politics has infuriated Mayor Lisa Gillmor.

“Jed should stay out of everything in our city in terms of operations,” she said last week in a Chronicle interview. “He’s meddled in our business, purchased council seats and gave instructions to have the city manager and city attorney fired. We have gone so far backward as a government because of him.”

Double ouch.

“Money is key, for sure, but this is more than money — I think he takes it personally,” (Santa Clara business leader Kirk) Vartan said of York. Given Gillmor’s presence in office, York “saw he did not have that path to control, and he’s all about control,” Vartan said.

Triple ouch.

The ’22 election was a disaster. York targeted Gillmor and spent $2.5 million hoping to replace her with Anthony Becker, one of the council members he had helped elect. But Becker absorbed a crushing loss, and the District Attorney (Jeff Rosen) launched a criminal investigation into alleged election-year improprieties involving then-49ers lobbyist Rahul Chandhok.

Quadruple ouch.

There’s a lot more.

York would not comment on the story. That was probably a smart move given his recent performance.

    • Don’t forget our City Clerk!!
      No on “A” City Clerk
      No on “B” Police Chief

At this point every “battle” is a “battle” worth fighting for.
Wait, can I say “Fight”, can I say “Battle”?
Before you think I’m just trying to be funny, Anthony Becker actually called the SC Police Dept when I used the quote, “Ready, Fire, Aim”, I just happened to be reading the Best Selling book by the same name. It is also title of a cool song by Green Day.
I guess Mr. Becker was afraid of my reading and music choices….

What a waste of our award winning 911 Call Center’s time, and ultimately our Santa Clara Police Dept’s time.
Promise, I didn’t make any of this up.

How scary, our City was within 800 votes of having this person as our Mayor.
By the way, I hear tomorrow he has another Court Date, but the really important one is March 4th. Perjury Felony Charges..
Remember Orange is the New Black….

So….. Vote No on both “A” and “B”
      ENOUGH
Now let’s all Cheer the team on to Victory on Feb 11th.

  1. Could someone please post the link to donate to Keep Our Elected Police Chief campaign? I seemed to have misplaced it. Thanks in advance.

  2. The reporters got one thing right, the team has done much better since Jed has kept off the gridiron. Outside of that, this is more of a blind hit piece ahead of the March 5 election. Those who have been around long enough know the Santa Clara City Council has been embroiled in turmoil for decades.

York also backed more diversity and positive social change in the community; the authors didn’t give him credit for that. Don’t forget the $6,000,000 Gillmor, Santana, and Doyle spent fighting against the California Voting Rights Act. That’s probably why Santana and Doyle were fired.

    • Nah! This is what Jed York is all about. The article exposing him for the spoiled brat that he is. Articles in WSJ the SJChron and Santa Clara news expose Jed York to be the liar he is. He didn’t back diversity in SC. It was another setup to control districts and who runs for council. His total disruption of the local government all in the name of giving him power.
