Ballot Argument for Measure A: November’s Sales Tax Increase

Vote YES on Measure A: Keep Our Local Hospitals Open

Our local hospitals are in crisis. Reckless decisions in Washington, driven by President Trump and Congress, have led to devastating and unprecedented cuts in critical healthcare funding, leaving Santa Clara County with a massive one-billion-dollar shortfall. If we don’t take action, hospitals may be forced to shut down, and other critical County services will be slashed. This would result in longer wait times, fewer doctors, and longer drives to receive care.

Measure A offers a balanced and responsible solution. The funding gap will be covered by a combination of County spending cuts and short-term local funding from Measure A that remains right here in Santa Clara County.

This issue affects more than just a few hospitals or those on Medi-Cal; it will impact everyone. When emergency rooms close, patients do not simply disappear — they crowd into the nearest hospital. This leads to skyrocketing wait times, increased costs, and a decline in the quality of care. Even those with private insurance will experience longer wait times, higher costs, and greater distances to travel when every minute counts.

The funding shortfall is likely to gravely affect Santa Clara Valley Healthcare, which serves one in four county residents, operates two of only three local trauma centers, and provides nearly half of all emergency room visits in Santa Clara County. If it struggles, the entire healthcare system is at risk.

Measure A is temporary: it will last for five years and includes strict oversight and independent audits so that voters can see how the funds are utilized. Importantly, the federal government cannot take a single cent of this funding.

Vote YES on Measure A to keep our hospitals open, protect access to care for everyone, and ensure help is available when we need it most.

  1. Dear Community

    FAFO!!!!!!

Vote, I do not care how you Vote, but….

We can not closethe Hospital in Gilroy.

We Can not close O’Connor Hospital for Seniors.

We can not close Valley Medical.

That leaves Regional Medical Center in the Heart of the East Valley, to close.

I will never tell anyone how to Vote, but these are the Hospital Alternatives.

I will Vote so that the East Valley still has open Departments in the East Valley.

A few pennies is worth the SAFETY OF OUR EAST VALLEY FAMILIES.

    This is my position.

I am always open for discussion.

  2. For Just Saying,

    After the resignation of Matthews:

    Who picked up the pieces??

    Merc, Miles, Caserta,
Mahan. Kolstad all called for Gillmor.

It is easy to leave broken pieces on the floor,

Lisa had to pick up the mess.

  3. In the immediate aftermath of Superbowl 2016, the then city manager, finance director, AND city attorney all quit barely after the game clock was down to zero. Why did they all suddenly quit right after the Superbowl? Almost anybody with common sense and critical thinking skills will come to the same conclusion as to the reasons why, and, of course, it involves their incestuous relationship with the 49er’s owner and corporate management.

Will history repeat itself this time around too?

Most of the decisions made by our current council majority, the city manager, and the city attorney have gone in the 49ers direction and against the best interest of Santa Clara citizens, just like the last time around. The 49ers bought our city council, city manager and city attorney for just this reason, imo, and it will be interesting to see how some may be rewarded, after the Superbowl/FIFA.

  4. I need to learn more about what this will cost taxpayers, but I have to say I really resent being forced to dig deeper into my purse to make up for the slash and burn assault on social services by the corrupt right-wing Congress when California already subsidizes social services in red states where there are perpetual tax shortfalls.

  5. Vote no on Newsom’s redistricting measure too. Let’s show the the Democrats they are losing control of California.

  6. “Governments continue to live beyond their means and instead of being fiscally responsible, they simply come to residents with their hand out wanting more.”

Amen! Our City is already operating with a $32M fiscal deficit. Then there’s the $400M
municipal bond with interest to pay off for years to come. Guess who will pay for that? YOU!

It will show up buried in small print for years to come on your property tax bill!

And then there’s the substantial costs the City Manager and City Attorney may have incurred due to poor legal advice and badly negotiated contracts with the 49’ers, FIFE, etc.

It’s amazing the damage just 5 people can do. Vote them out!

  7. There is no way I support this. Our government overspends on BS programs and continually wastes taxpayer dollars. Every time they run short, they look to increase revenue instead of making tough decisions and actually governing. They use fear tactics to get these measures passed.
We need to force our leaders to live within their means instead of attempting to bilk taxpayers out of more money.

  8. We already pay a ton of taxes and medical care premiums are through the roof and still you want more. Ridiculous!!

  9. I’m voting NO. Stop stealing and start spending the tax dollars we already pay responsibly. We are already taxed through death. With government nothing is temporary
